Qualification: PhD in biology, ecology, behavior sciences, botany, wildlife conservation, or other discipline related to elephant biology and/or human-wildlife conflict; OR Masters in one of these fields with demonstrable publishable research; AND Demonstrated abilities in scientific writing; Competency and demonstrated accomplishment in rigorous research design and statistical analysis (preferably using the program R);
Experience Requirements: Exposure of working with research and conservation institutions Collecting and managing data Writing and publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers Working in teams and managing teams of at least two other people Working in elephant landscapes Engaging respectfully with communities suffering from human-elephant conflict Proficiency/fluency in Assamese and/or Hindi is desired

Job Responsibilities: Western Ghats/Nilgiris Landscape For this work, WWF-India seeks a Senior Project Officer—Elephant Research Biologist (SPO-ERB) to co-lead elephant and HEC research in the Western Ghats/Nilgiris Landscape. This SPO-ERB will coordinate/co-lead the following efforts: S/he will also support the following efforts, which might be led at the landscape or national level by WWF and/or collaborators: Rigorous estimation of elephant populations at various scales using genetic capture-recapture; Collection of HEC data from government offices across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala for the IUCN – WWF-India collaboration with Project Elephant to establish a central database on HEC; Data collection, analysis, and writing to support the selected priority conservation advocacy efforts for elephants in the Western Ghats/Nilgiris Landscape; Data collection and field assistance for adaptive on-demand conservation in support of communities and the Forest Department with respect to reducing human-elephant conflict.
